Destruction OF Land
"We need to save the forests. I have a big warehouse we can store them in."
-Bauvard, Evergreens are Prudish
Deforestation has been a huge problem for many years. "Scientists believe that we are losing an area of rain forest the size of Pennsylvania each year." This destruction of land is caused by multiple things. Some of the most obvious causes are factories cutting down trees for its wood and other resources, and natural disasters corrupting the land. Adding on to those causes there are also people moving to forest areas due to over crowded cities but also to create small scale farms. Commercial Agricultural projects cause vast amounts of forestland to be destroyed for their own purposes. The destruction of land can be seen in areas all around us today. A large majority of forests are being cut down everyday to create buildings, houses, factories, and towns. Deforestation is definitely a negative effect that people have had on nature due to our interactions with it. A large historical cause of the amount of deforestation that has been happening today is both of the World Wars. In both wars there was vast amounts of damage due to trenches and bombings.

This chart is describing the main causes of deforestation.
World war I and II
Bombardment
"Four days the earth was rent and torn
By bursting steel,
The houses fell about us;
Three nights we dared not sleep,
Sweating, and listening for the imminent crash
Which meant our death.
The fourth night every man,
Nerve-tortured, racked to exhaustion,
Slept, muttering and twitching,
While the shells crashed overhead.
The fifth day there came a hush;
We left our holes
And looked above the wreckage of the earth
To where the white clouds moved in silent lines
Across the untroubled blue."
-Richard Aldington

The human race has destroyed land for as long as anyone can remember. When people discovered America, land was destroyed for the settlements. Even back to the Roman Empire, their expansion caused land to be destroyed. The two world wars are just one example of land destruction. World War I and II were wars during the 1900's in which many countries around the world fought in the war. Both wars were started for different reasons but mainly due to the fact the countries wanted to be the superpower of the world, so they would rise to power and eventually declare war on other countries. Alliances would be formed and well, a world war broke out. These wars lasted for years and much of the fighting was done over in Europe. Soldiers and common people died as there was the use of bombs, guns and really whatever else they could manage to get. Both wars had some negative effects on the environment though. During these times many countries went into a state of total war; a time when they put everything into their war fighting efforts. And because of this, forests in Europe would be chopped down. Places like Norway and Poland lost massive forests just because of one war. Forests that had been growing for thousands of years would just be gone; the war ravaged them. They would use whatever land they could get. Bomb shells and craters would be found where there once was woods. Trees take a long time to grow back, and by destroying all of these trees, it not only destroys the land, but also the air. Trees provide oxygen that we need to breathe, and no trees means less oxygen. World War I and II are only two examples of land destruction, but it has been an ongoing occurrence that we as humans still face, even to this day.
How does this relate to our theme?
Land destruction has so much to do with the interaction with the environment. Think back to the two world wars, those effects are still seen today. People destroyed the land back then, thus destroying the environment along with it. Forests were destroyed all because of human interaction. What others did back then still impacts people today. The history of land destruction shows how humans interact with the environment and how much it really impacted the human race. Both the wars were a main cause for the rate of deforestation today. Destruction of land is a negative impact people have had on the environment. This negative interaction will quickly increase if people don't start becoming aware of the effects soon. Overall, land destruction and the world wars are have a great deal to due with the interactions with the environment.
